ThatchZyme offers the first proven thatch control program

Turfgrass researchers at ZymeCO have developed and manufactured a proprietary sprayable enzyme now being offered as ThatchZyme to lawn care companies as an effective new solution for managing thatch in lawns.

One challenge for LCO’s in maintaining healthy and well cared for lawns is the potential for turfgrass to develop excess thatch. Building upon years of research and testing, the team at ZymeCo has created ThatchZyme - the first effective and proven sprayable program for managing turfgrass thatch.

According to Dr. Phil Dwyer of ZymeCo, “Customers have told us how excess thatch can affect lawn quality throughout the season and have shared the different problems thatch causes like: puffy uneven growth resulting in mower wheel rutting and scalping, increased disease pressure, shallow rooting, and poor water use efficiency. Many also describe how aggressive mechanical aerification and dethatching practices may help, these practices also pose challenges and have limitations due to high equipment and labor costs plus the growing potential of damaging buried wires like those used for: internet, dog fences, and autonomous mower guides.”

With these issues in mind, turfgrass researchers looked to fungal biology to discover a way to accelerate thatch breakdown. ZymeCo co-founder Dr. Tad Huber explains “The reason thatch persists and accumulates in lawns is because of a protective component contained in its plant cell walls called lignin. Fungi are especially good at producing very powerful enzymes in order to decompose or “eat” hard to degrade organic matter like thatch. In nature this lignin can only be broken down enzymatically by a specific enzyme called Laccase. Knowing this we were able to develop a fungal fermentation process in our Colorado Springs biofactory to make a highly concentrated and effective proprietary form of laccase”.

Applied to turfgrass in a spray program, this laccase in ThatchZyme works to break down the lignin in thatch which then allows the existing soil biology to do the rest of its work, degrading thatch easier and faster.

Operations seeking an effective sprayable program for managing thatch now have a solution to both offer results for customers and a new source of incremental sales revenue. ThatchZyme is tank-mix compatible and works in yearly programs of 3 to 6 applications per season.

Philip Beaver, Tipton Golf Course, Tipton, IN. Golf Course Superintendent, speaks about his first experience with using ThatchZyme.

How did you first trial ThatchZyme?

ThatchZyme at .8oz/M/biweekly on greens for the growing season. Objective was to "curatively" reduce OM in greens to see if we can skip our regular large hollow aerification. We've done double verticutting and sand topdressing. We'll know next year how well they hold up.

How did you measure thatch/OM changes, were there any other related turfgrass responses observed by you or others?

Disappointingly, we didn't measure OM. However, there is a reduction in OM layering from old inconsistent cultural practices as well as a nice uptick in firmness. My clientele has complained of being too firm which means the greens will likely hold up to heavy rain events. Will know more after using again.

Overall, how did the product perform per your goals/expectations?

The product has lived up to the hype. We'll see if it surpasses expectations next year.

Any other insights or recommendations to share with fellow turfgrass managers considering using ThatchZyme?

Tyler Guy, Golf Course Superintendent for Signal Mountain Golf & Country Club, speaks about his first experience with using AlgaeZyme.

How did you first trial AlgaeZyme?

1 application at 0.77floz/m (that rate 3x is the amount of product I had)

How did you measure/compare/notice changes, were there any other related turfgrass responses observed by you or others?

Visually, no negative effects on turf. Algae completely eliminated.

Overall, how did the product perform per your goals/expectations?

The product far outperformed my expectations. Weather conditions were good for fighting algae, but I still did not expect to see that level of control. There are areas where algae is always a battle and AlgaeZyme has worked better than any other products we've tried.

Any other insights or recommendations to share with fellow turfgrass managers considering using AlgaeZyme?

If you have algae, spray AlgaeZyme. Pretty simple.

ThatchZyme’s customer outreach and education World Turf Tours most recently brought us to the United Arab Emirates with our hosting distribution partner Living Turf. Site visits to top golf courses, cricket and soccer pitches helped us learn more about the unique needs Superintendents and Sports field managers are challenged by when growing performance turfgrass in desert extremes over 12 month seasons. In addition to these visits, the agronomists from Living Turf, ZymeCo, Mitchell Products and the Desert Group held manager educational seminars to share the latest in turfgrass science research: including how sprayable ThatchZyme programs work as a tool for managing thatch accumulation and optimizing organic matter for soil health. We’re grateful to everyone who participated and helped make this trip fantastic.

How FulviZyme Helps Plants Eat Better

Nutrients often get “stuck” in the soil. FulviZyme acts like a tiny “nutrient shuttle” that grabs those nutrients and helps deliver them to the plants where they can actually use them.

Nutrients often get “stuck” in the soil. FulviZyme acts like a tiny “nutrient shuttle” that grabs those nutrients and helps deliver them to the plants where they can actually use them.

           What is FulviZyme?

FulviZyme is a chelate that has natural “grab points” that hold on to nutrient ions. Think of it as a C-shaped claw that scoops up a nutrient and keeps it from getting locked up in the soil.

           How it works:

            Grab

FulviZyme latches on to a nutrient; this “chelation” keeps the nutrient from tying up in the soil so it stays available.

            Carry

Once attached, the nutrient is more mobile in the soil solution. That means it can move toward the plant instead of getting trapped.

            Deliver

At the root surface, the plant can pull the nutrient in more easily. FulviZyme helps at the doorway by supporting the natural pumps and channels the root uses to bring nutrients inside.

           Grower Benefits of using FulviZyme

More of what you paid for gets used

Better availability means higher nutrient use efficiency, especially in challenging pH or high-calcium soils.

            Stronger start and steady growth

When micronutrients reach the plant on time, photosynthesis, enzyme activity, and overall vigor improve.

            Plays well with others

FulviZyme supports beneficial microbes and root hairs, which further improve nutrient capture.

            Do more with less

When plants absorb and use nutrients efficiently, you can often reach goals with smarter programs.

that call out recurring micronutrient shortages

Not all enzymes are the same and where they come from makes a big difference. At ZymeCO, our laccase enzyme is derived from white rot fungi because they are more potent and stable. This means our enzymes are more effective at breaking down thatch and crop residue.

Here’s why our fungal laccases are the go-to solution for organic matter management.

           1. Fungi Break Down Tough Stuff

Fungi are nature’s clean-up crew. They specialize in breaking down organic material like tree stumps, leaf litter, and turning over organic matter in the soil. That’s what makes fungal enzymes perfect for:

            Managing thatch layers

            Breaking down crop stubble

Releasing tied-up nutrients in the soil

They do the hard work that bacteria often can’t handle as well.

           2. They Handle Harsh Conditions

Our fungal laccase enzymes are more stable in different temperatures and pH levels due to our proprietary stabilization technology. Whether they’re sitting in a jug or being sprayed in the field, they keep working. This leads to:

            Longer shelf life

            Reliable results

            Less risk of breakdown

You can trust our enzymes to work when conditions aren’t perfect.

           3. They Work Well with Other Products

Enzymes are a great match with biologicals and biostimulants. Enzymes help break things down. Biologicals help rebuild soil life. Biostimulants support plant health. Together, they:

            Speed up nutrient cycling

            Improve root development

            Strengthen your overall program

Fungal enzymes act fast and give your other tools a boost.

           4. They’re Targeted and Powerful

Enzymes are complex and precise. Each one is made to do a specific job. This means:

            Faster action

            More predictable results

            Better return on investment

They don’t just work — they work smart. Our fungal enzymes are tough, efficient, and proven to perform in the field.

ZymeCO’s enzyme products are made through a natural fermentation process to work quickly in breaking down organic matter like thatch or crop residue. These bio-active enzymes are not living organisms, which means they’re very consistent, easy to store, and act right away. In contrast, most biologicals and biostimulants use living microbes or plant-based compounds that work more slowly and may vary depending on the environment. Biologicals help improve soil health over time by building microbial populations, while biostimulants support plant growth and stress tolerance.

When used together, enzymes can jumpstart the process by making nutrients more available, creating a better environment for biologicals to thrive and allowing biostimulants to work more effectively. It’s a team approach; enzymes get things moving, and biologicals and biostimulants help sustain the momentum.

How did you first trial ThatchZyme?

“Our first trial was like any other trial, unsure of what to expect. We applied it to tee boxes on two holes that sit right next to each other, that way we had the same environment for the trial and the control. We have been working on reducing organic matter in our tee boxes as much has built up over the years. We did the trial starting in early spring of 2023 and continued it through the summer. Our goal was to reduce organic content in the profile.”

How did you measure thatch/OM changes, were there any other related turfgrass responses observed?

“We measured the organic content through the OM 246 testing method. That way we had hard data that would confirm or deny our observations. We also would take photos of the profile every two weeks side by side of each hole to confirm. We did observe more uniformity when the tees would dry down throughout the season. We would see inconsistent patterns before using the product. We also felt the tees we used the product on held up better to foot traffic.”

Overall, how did the product perform per your goals/expectations?

“The product met our expectations, our goal was to reduce organic content in the profile for better performing tee boxes. We achieved that with observations and data to support that.”

What other insights or recommendations would you share with fellow turfgrass managers considering using ThatchZyme?

“Just try the product, there will be no negative result from utilizing this tool. Set a reasonable objective to maintain in managing your organic matter and what you desire. At the end of the day it is what you desire as the Superintendent, this will supplement your practices in achieving your objective when higher organic levels are present. You will have healthier and stronger playing surfaces.”

If you're managing turfgrass, you know how algal crusts aren't just unsightly—they are a real barrier to healthy turf.

If you're managing turfgrass, you know how

aren't just unsightly—they are a real barrier to healthy turf. These dense, green-black layers form on the soil surface, especially in thin, compacted or poorly drained areas, sealing off oxygen and water movement. The result? Difficulty filling in, poor density, shallow roots, inconsistent turf growth, and long-term stress on your grass.

highlights the significant impact of reduced tillage intensity and increased crop yields on soil organic carbon (SOC) storage in the central United States. Analyzing data from Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota between 2000 and 2021, the researchers found that decreased tillage and higher yields led to substantial SOC gains, indicating that soils are not yet approaching carbon saturation.

This research confirms the importance of effective crop residue management in enhancing soil health and carbon sequestration. As crop yields increase, more non-harvested carbon (NHC) in the form of crop residues returns to the soil. Efficient decomposition of these residues is crucial to prevent nutrient immobilization and to promote SOC accumulation.

ThatchZyme is an innovative, enzyme-based turf management product designed to address the persistent issue of thatch accumulation on golf courses and other high-maintenance turf areas. Developed by ZymeCO™, ThatchZyme is their flagship product that utilizes a specific enzyme to break down lignin, a primary component of thatch that is resistant to natural decomposition.

           The Science Behind ThatchZyme

Thatch is a layer of organic material, including stems, roots, and rhizomes, that accumulates between the green vegetation and the soil surface. Its high lignin content makes it particularly resistant to microbial breakdown. ThatchZyme addresses this challenge by incorporating laccase, an enzyme that specifically targets and degrades lignin, facilitating the decomposition of thatch without harming the turf.

have demonstrated that regular applications of laccase can significantly reduce thatch layers. For instance, treatments over a six-month period resulted in a 57% reduction in thatch thickness and a 25% decrease in organic matter content in the topsoil.
Move Over Leonardite — There’s a New Fulvic Coming to Farms

ZymeCO™ is pleased to offer a new sustainable and highly bio-available plant derived fulvic acid: FulviZyme.

Fulvic acids are commonly used in agriculture to enhance nutrient uptake in cropping systems. They can be applied at planting or combined with foliar nutrient applications. However, the sources of fulvic acids vary and some have drawbacks due to their production methods and compatibility with common agricultural inputs. Some products may be marketed as “high-fulvic” but actually have low concentrations or poor-quality extract unless third-party tested.

ZymeCO™ is pleased to offer a new sustainable and highly bio-available plant derived fulvic acid: FulviZyme. FulviZyme is a naturally extracted fulvic acid derived through a proprietary mycelium fermentation process. In addition to fulvic acid, FulviZyme contains silica based nanoliquid® technology to help drive nutrient uptake as well as beneficial enzymes and microbial exudates that help boost crop health.

We’re excited to announce a new chapter in our journey: Colorado Biofactory is now ZymeCO.

This change isn’t just about a name—it marks the evolution of our vision and our commitment to redefining what’s possible through enzyme technology.

Our Story Starts at the Dinner Table

In 2021, a conversation over dinner sparked an idea that would eventually grow into something much bigger. Dr. Thaddaus Huber, a scientist with more than 15 years of experience in protein engineering and biomanufacturing, was introduced to a problem facing turfgrass managers across the country: thatch accumulation.

The challenge was brought to Thaddaus's attention by Armen Suny, Thaddaus’s father-in-law and a seasoned veteran in the turf industry. During the previous summer, Armen witnessed thatch collapse disease firsthand—a newly identified turf disease. Fascinated by how quickly natural fungal enzymes break down organic material, Armen proposed an idea: could Thaddaus develop a sprayable enzyme solution to tackle thatch buildup? What began as garage experiments quickly evolved into something groundbreaking—ThatchZyme, an innovative, enzyme-based product engineered to efficiently combat thatch accumulation.

Building a Team with Purpose

To turn this innovation into a scalable solution, Thaddaus joined forces with Dr. Michael Cantrell, co-founder of Colorado Biofactory. Michael brings a PhD in Botany from Colorado State University, along with deep experience in biological engineering, algal and plant physiology, and fungal fermentation. With over 15 years of research behind him, Michael co-leads ZymeCO’s scientific development, driving forward solutions that are both sustainable and effective. Most recently ZymeCO also hired turf veterans and PhDs Mark Slavens as CEO, and Phil Dwyer as VP Sales & Marketing.

Why ZymeCO?

The name ZymeCO reflects our roots in enzyme innovation and our commitment to collaboration, sustainability, and science-backed solutions. Our mission is simple: to harness the power of nature to solve real problems in turfgrass, and we have now branched out to the agriculture industry.

Whether it’s enzyme degradation, plant response studies, or bio-based fermentation, our work is grounded in the belief that sustainable innovation doesn’t have to compromise on performance.

What’s Next?

           We’re just getting started.

At ZymeCO, we're proud to be at the intersection of science and sustainability—developing high-performance products that help turf and ag professionals do more, naturally.

ThatchZyme delivers the only sprayable active enzyme proven to manage turfgrass thatch. It works for you by targeting the hard to degrade parts of thatch and accelerating its breakdown.

           HOW IT WORKS

ThatchZyme harnesses the power of Laccase, a well-researched thatch-degrading enzyme, to accelerate the breakdown of thatch.

Laccase works at the molecular scale by targeting lignin—the tough, slow-to-decompose part of thatch. While soil fungi naturally produce Laccase, its production is suppressed by nitrogen fertilization and other cultural practices leading to concentrations too low to keep pace with the rapid buildup of turfgrass thatch.

ThatchZyme solves this deficiency by supplying an effective dose of this crucial enzyme into the thatch zone.

The result? Effective, non-disruptive thatch management that integrates seamlessly into your existing spray programs.

           HOW TO USE

Spray ThatchZyme monthly at 1 quart per acre during the active growing season and for managing thatch. It harnesses the power of water in after application to get the enzymes in contact with the thatch/OM zone.

ThatchZyme is compatible with common liquid fertilizers, surfactants, and soil sprays. We recommend three consecutive monthly applications to begin. The best results are obtained from season-long spray programs. We recommend evaluating performance by performing OM246 soil testing and evaluating visual changes using a flat soil profiler.
